Editorial
Welcome to the madcap days of the middle of August. Happy
Hari Merdeka to you all. (Indonesian Independence Day August
16) Things started picking up last week with the summer shows
beginning in earnest. Tsuyoshi, Jon Stevens and Ratu all packing
them in. August is well and truly on the rise and if you are
here right now you are in for a treat as gigs galore are coming
your way.
In this edition of The Beat
you’ll notice a change in the lay-out which gives you
more information regarding the performers who are here during
this period. Instead of profiles after the event we are placing
more emphasis on them before they get here. You’ll be
able to find out everything you need to know about these artists
before the show or if you go along you’ll be able to
find out more once you get home. The Beat is even more of
a Now Magazine than ever before.
The next two week’s highlights
are a mix of top DJ Dance Music and Live Performance with
international and national artists here to bring the best
of the world’s entertainment to our shores. Circus du
Soleil, Juan Atkins, The Upstairs, All the Best DJs coming
out of Jakarta, DJ Marcella, Jocelyn Brown, DJ Mark Farina,
Spinning Wheel and a bunch of Djs from The Junction people.
It’s a busy couple of weeks so hang on for the ride.
The Kuta Karnival is coming
soon. The annual event is back next month and needs the support
from all the community. We have details of what’s in
store with this largest community event of the year in this
edition and wish that all businesses in town get behind it

Juan Atkins Live!
A living legend in dance music circles, Juan ‘Magic’
Atkins is considered by many to be one of the
inventors of techno music. With Derrick May and
Kevin Saunderson, the trio were known as ‘The
Belleville Three” after the Detroit neighborhood
they grew up in. With an array of musical influences,
from Kraftwerk to Parliament to Prince, the three
started putting out their own original music featuring
the heavy use of synthesizers a la Kraftwerk and
a stripped-down futuristic sound that reflected
the industrial landscape surrounding them. Atkins
and May created mix tracks on the legendary radio
show by Charles ‘Electrifying Mojo’
Johnson, who’s eclectic sets had been a
strong musical influence. It wasn’t long
before they were putting out their own releases,
Atkins under the moniker Cybotron and Model 500
came up with classics like “No UFO’s,”
“Night Drive,” “Future”
and “Clear.” This was in the mid eighties,
but these tracks can rock dance floors to this
very day. Expect killer fast hands and some of
the finest Detroit techno you’re ever hear.
