  THE BEAT UPDATE 154

The Beat magazine edition 154 is out Friday. Pick it up in the usual places.

Editorial

As we go to print, Bali celebrates Galungan, an annual festival (according to the Balinese calendar) which occurs every 210 days. It acknowledges the victory of Good (Dharma) over Evil (Adharma), continuing for ten days and concluding with Kuningan, when the Balinese hold special ceremonies for the ancestral spirits. Perhaps timed to coincide with Galungan is the second Quest For Global Healing conference (Ubud, 03-08 May), which gathers together some highly influential people, amongst them Desmond Tutu, Indonesian President, His Excellency Susilo Yudhoyono and two Nobel Peace Prize laureates. Let us hope that both these events herald a harmonious Summer season for all of us. On the subject of harmony, this edition we announce the winner of last issue’s Think Globali competition (page 49), who’ll be enjoying two nights stay at the serene and very in vogue bvilla and spa. It was a tough one, but goes to show just how ethnically diverse this little island has always been. You’ll find similar variety in our events review – find out if world number one DJ Tiesto lived up to all the hype (page 56) while on a live tip, we check out Jazz warriors Maliq D’Essentials who brought their funk essentials to Hard Rock Café on April 22 (page 44). As if one world class DJ wasn’t enough, legendary UK spinner Judge Jules will be playing at new Jakarta club K7 on 17 May and Double Six on 18 May – The Beat has five pairs of tickets to give away to five lucky winners (page 62).
We also get together with two very different musical creatives, dance music pioneer Electrofuxx with his cyborg frequencies (page 54) and acoustic purist The Fonz (page 50), while roving reporter DynaMona sheds some light on the titillating tradition of cabaret and burlesque, an increasingly popular entertainment form here in Bali (page 52) Looking ahead, June 03 sees Embassy Playground, a huge dance festival at Ancol featuring a raft of international acts (scoop, page 28)
Plus, of course reviews of the latest music and game releases, film, food and art for all you curious Beat-niks out there… Peace, step lightly. Ed.
