For those unfamiliar with Gado Gado, the restaurant is located at the quiet, bottom end of busy Jl. Dhyana Pura where it faces Legian Beach and its famous setting sun. The main room is spacious, airy, and lit romantically with dim overheads and candle light during the dinner hours. During the months when rain and wind are not so much of an issue, the sliding glass doors remain open, connecting the al fresco terrace dining area with the main room and providing a sublime area from which to cool off with the ocean breeze, sip on sunset cocktails, and dine on cuisine that has garnered acclaim for the restaurant.
About 90% of Gado Gado’s lunch menu has been changed to include about 18 varied selections that range in price from Rp 35,000 – 80,000. Options such as the Light Kohlrabi Crème Soup (with Grilled Opaka Fillet) and Beetroot Prawn Salad are perfect for a light, healthy lunch, while the Grilled Mahi Mahi, Marinated Oven Roasted Duck Leg, Pork Fillet, Sweet Corn Beetroot Blinis, and Atlantic Salmon Fillet provide excellent choices for the hungrier set. New twists on Italian flavors such as the Penne served with smoked pork, sweet peas, and rocket or Potato and Tomato Carpaccio stand alongside Gado Gado favorites like Semolina Gnocchi and Linguini Seafood. A number of side dishes including potato wedges and a variety of salads are also still available a la carte on the lunch menu for those seeking to supplement their meal or eat on the light side.
Most of the choices on the dinner menu have remained due to popularity while others, such as the Blue Swimmer Crab and Lobster Bisque, have justifiably returned by demand. On the entrée side, 2 new selections have been added to the menu of 11 starters. The White Wine Risotto served with warm foie gras and caramelized apple is inventive and delicious and the Butter Fish Fillet that comes layered with tofu and rocket is set off with a savory capsicum dressing that unifies the delicate flavor of butter fish with the smoky taste of rucola. A fresh seafood dominated appetizer includes varied selections ranging from Sydney Rock Oyster to Seared Scallops to Marinated Prawns, while other choices such as Gyoza Duck Ravioli and Veal Carpaccio fill in the blanks nicely.
Moving on to the main course, one will find choices such as White wine Risotto, River Prawns and Soft Shell Crab, Garupa Fillet, Fillet of Beef, and 1/2 Grilled Baby Lobster have been added to the list. The latter is served with kaffir lime butter sauce, herbs, baby carrot and saffron risotto and is prepared deliciously with a tangy bite from the kaffir lime flavoring that complements the al dente risotto and succulent lobster rightly. Gado Gado standards including Lamb Shank, Opaka Fillet, Rack of Lamb, 1/2 Baby Chicken and Over Roasted Duck Breast remain on the menu, once again, because of their reputation.
The popular dessert menu has 2 new items including a Raspberry Tiramisu with Coconut Foam and a Valhrona Chocolate Mousse with Strawberry Salad. Both will surely sate any sweet tooth and provide a perfect ending to a Gado Gado meal. Finally, conclude it all with a cognac, brandy, sherry, port, or coffee and cigar, and leave satisfied that rediscovering Gado Gado and its recent menu additions was well worth the trip.
