Thali & Mehfil at Queen’s Tandoor |
Go to any roadside restaurant in India and you’re likely to be served a dish known as Thali. You might call it the equivalent of Indonesia’s Nasi Campur (mixed rice), an assortment of dishes including curries, rice, dhal and chappatti usually served on a large metal tray with variously sized indentations. Go down to Queen’s Tandoor at lunchtime and you’ll be able to feast upon authentic Thali, made with the finest ingredients imported from India “even our turmeric comes from India because the local variety doesn’t taste the same,” Queen’s proprietor Puneet explains. Milk based dishes like paneer and yoghurt are made with fresh, unpasteurized milk, delivered straight from the farm. There are vegetarian, chicken and mutton varieties with prices from 40 to 60 with tea, coffee and traditional Indian sweets available.
If it’s dinner you’re after, try going down on Tuesday or Thursday when you’ll be able to hear classical Indian music from Rajasthan and Gujarat played on sitar, tabla, basoori (flute) and shehnai (trumpet) by musicians who’ve trained in India. Puneet has tried to give the feel of Mehfil, an Urdu word describing a tradition whereby the old Rajas would entertain guests with live music and feed them delicious food. So come down and get your Thali & your Mehfil on!
