Kudeta completed its September series of film screenings with a celebration of independent film last Tuesday 26 September. In The Realm Of The Senses is a Melbourne based film festival which taps into the budding creativity of up and coming filmmakers. Besides monthly film events, it presents an annual outdoor film festival in August of which the Kudeta film happening is an offshoot. In all 15 films were shown, running from 3 to seventeen minutes, most but not all hailing from Australia. Standouts for The Beat were Ward 13, a manic animation using what appeared to be clay models and mixing action and horror genres to hilarious effect, Mulit, a satire on Bollywood musicals, about forbidden love and a hairdresser who inadvertently invents the mullet hair cut. Everything Goes, based on a Raymond Carver short story starred Hugo Weaving (of Matrix fame) and had a certain poignancy to it. Much of the Australian material dealt with identity issues stemming from the émigré status of the Australian population, with culturally specific reflections on childhood a recurring theme. The organisers are hoping to attract a more international selection of competitors next year – anyone interested can go to www.realmofsenses.com for more information. And a last point – why not build some networks with filmmakers here in Indonesia? It would have been nice to see some local independent film.
