132.. The first Beat Rock Fest was held at a small bar in Seminyak called Aina Bar back in Feb 2002. The gig didn’t have name then and only had one band, a fledgling Superman is Dead. They blew the roof off and the 40 people in attendance were treated to one of the biggest moments in Bali rock history. SID went on to play sell-out gigs around the country, pulling crowds of 20,000 people in Java and became the biggest band ever out of Bali. ….They aren’t playing this Friday night….but ten other bands are. We’ve got one of the biggest underground line-ups, from all over Indonesia, ever to be seen in Bali and The Beat Rock Fest, this year, is sure to be a monster. Read about it on the Main Stage. (Following pages).
Wow, The Beat has become so cultural lately. This week we start two new sections. One called Culture Counter - all about those weird and wonderfully quirky cultural things that happen around these parts and also, after so much bitchin’, so much wrangling, the captain of Shiva Shen, Made Wijaya begins a new chapter in The Beat. It’ll be interesting to see what he comes up with. We’ve found Roy, resident Zodiacologist. He went walkabout but now all is back to normal.
Also in these pages, the recent Air Supply gig and the Danny Howells were covered along with just about everything else in town. Read on…. We hope you enjoy it….Ed.
