Rounding that bend onto Jalan Pantai Kuta is always a welcome respite after enduring the Kuta chock-a-block up. That stretch of tarmac offers the ocean breeze from the left and a number of spacious eateries and bars to the right. One such pit-stop worth a rendezvous is the Kama Sutra restaurant, club, and lounge.
Its rather regal façade and manicured lawn stand apart from most Kuta backdrops and allow for a grand entry in which friendly staff usher you into the spacious foyer. The warm interior light accentuates the pillars and stonewalls as you pass into the main dining area which seats 200, with capacity for many more on a dance floor that faces a large stage underneath high ceilings and stage lights. This is where the 9 piece band, “Max Tempo” hold court from 11 pm, Monday – Saturday. DJ Woody, along with monthly Jakarta guest DJs, drop the R&B and Hip Hop jams before and in between the band’s skillful renditions of the latest in rhythm and blues in a proper venue atmosphere.
The restaurant, which is on the periphery of the dance area, is open from 7pm for dinner and serves up unpretentious Pan-Asian/Continental selections with a few Indian standards. There are several snack options to choose from as well. Chef Ricky Justianus from Jakarta claims the Ox-Tail soup as his forte and he was right; it was the best I’ve ever tasted. It consists of a savory, and surprisingly, non-oily broth spiced with fresh spring onions, ginger, nutmeg, and cloves. The lightly wrapped lumpia goreng and chicken wings, off the snack menu, were similarly well-seasoned and fresh.
Kama Sutra is a perfect spot to escape the bustle of Kuta, dine up, wine up, and then nice up the dance to some local talent, late night clubbing or rack up a game of pool upstairs.
