Cross Town Traffic
You may have been hearing rumours of new traffic regulations in and around the Kuta area to deal with the increasing congestion. The changes were scheduled to take effect on May 1st but were delayed. It was then to be June 13, but at time of writing nothing has happened…when it does though, be prepared for some chaos on the roads. It might be an idea to take a taxi, or even go by foot to avoid road rage. Authorities have promised a ‘week of tolerance and persuasion’ in which traffic infractions will be let go while we get used to it. Basically, get ready.
Spy-ing for 3 years
One of the pioneering clubs down Dhyana Pura, Spy Bar just celebrated their 3rd anniversary last Friday June 10. “We were full house till at least 4am” said Ari the manager. The line up of entertainment included stalwart residents Emon, Ifin, U-dee and Lanang wilding up the crowd and there was also some body painting by Dewa studio, laser lighting and sexy dancers just like pouring gasoline onto the flames. //gino++

The Asian Film Commissions Network (AFCNet) is holding their annual Conference in Bali this weekend with the aim of making Asia a center of film production in the future. Founded in 2004 by Film Commissioners from Japan, Malaysia, Korea, China, Russia, Vietnam and Indonesia (Bali Film Commission), AFCNet is a regionally based, full service, trade organization of industry professionals. While here, the conference members will be shown around the island’s unique film locations and will provide up-to-date broadcast news, industry research on policy issues, technology and management trends. One of the highlights of the conference will be a Gala Dinner held at Four Season Jimbaran Estates this Saturday night with dignitaries and film celebrities in attendance.

Sail Away…
Two luxury traditional phinisi which usually sail to the islands east of Bali recently launched a fleet of miniature sailing vessels to raise funds for the Komodo Foundation, an NGO involved in education and environmental awareness with a strong focus on Komodo and Flores. The boats, each with a commemaritive plate, are being sold for RP 100k with proceeds going to the Komodo Foundation. Once launched, the boats’ course will be governed by the wind and the tides. Should they wash up on some distant shore, whoever finds one has the opportunity to re-launch it on its continuing journey. | Paparazzi Black Card |
The funky mainstay and example ultra-cool bar, Paparazzi, adjacent and part of 66 Club on the beach in Seminyak, has become that much more cool for the local community with the introduction of the Black (members) Card. The idea is that with the summer season fast approaching, locals in the know will be able to by-pass the queue of mad Euro types trying to get into the hot club, which no doubt will be hotter than ever come August. Not really too cool for school but a lot more practical for locals trying to get a drink come the busy times ahead.

Castaway Found by FTV
Archie from Castaway has informed us that Fashion TV (FTV) will be holding a special televised fashion show at their event at GWK on August 16. The pre-rave show will come complete with international models and all the hoopla of the big event with a two meter high catwalk built from the stairs to the middle of the arena. “It’ll be like the Peace Awards, held back in 2003, with the swing arm TV cameras hovering across the crowd. Spectacular!” stated Archie. Even though FTV was billed to be here last week and didn’t make it, we do have confirmation that they will be here at this one.

Rock Fest Up-date
Belok Kiri Jalan Trus (BKJT) are the latest band in town who have crossed over from being a Top 40 act to Rockin’ Original Band. They sent us a CD to the office to listen to and we got so excited that we put ‘em straight into the line-up for the Beat Rock Fest. Great tracks of classic rock delivered with a punch and a Slank, cum Daddy Cool meets Black Sabbath ilk. Junk Abenk, on vocals, wails his way thru the CD with the polish of a seasoned operator and the band totally rocks. It’ll be interesting to see how they put it together on the Main Stage. Yes, the Rock Fest has moved to the Main Stage of the Kuta Karnival. Better sound and lighting was the reason and we look set for a big night out on July 1st. There’s also word that Bandung rockers, Koil will be making an unscheduled pit stop at the Fest. According to them, they have always wanted to do it (be part of the Fest) and just happen to be the background figure (with the guitar) on the advert we’ve been using since 2003 for the Fest, so seems only natural they should be there on the night.
