The world’s moving fast. If you’re not careful it can race away without you, that is, if you are interested in following it at all.
There’s a lot of interesting things happening on this island. The roads are bad, the town planning is sick, the place is a mess but we love it that way. We wouldn’t want it any other way. During the first few months of this year we’ve had a look around the region, been to Singapore, Hong Kong, Perth, KL and Jakarta. We were interested in having a look and see exactly what’s going on in our neighbourhood and you know what? It’s all pretty exciting but there’s a certain sameness about everything. The same shops, the same malls, the same brands, the same fast food, the same road networks. Makes you wonder who or what is controlling things. Here, it’s different, it’s all different. We have v ariety. Nothing’s the same, from one day to the next, nothing’s the same. Maybe this is unnerving for the ma jority of humanity but we love it (even tho sometimes it does get a bit shaky). Obviously, there are a few things that need attention but we have the feeling that some of those points are being looked at right now. But remember, we are happy with what we’ve got and we don’t need to change much to keep it the way we like it. A bit more parking wouldn’t hurt but don’t make it the same as everywhere else. Thanks.
With 130 editions (which adds up to 5 complete years) of The Beat I must say something about it at this juncture. Looking back briefly, when I think about the good things that have happened over the last five years, things like the Suicide Beat Radio Show, The Beat Parties, The Rock Fest, the development of Seminyak, the renewel of Kuta, all the believers right from the start – some of them gone, some still going -, all the gifted people who have helped to make this magazine and the sponsors and advertisers who have shown they believe in us and what we do, thanks. A big THANKS. At the end of the day it’s all been a lot of work but we do it for one reason, besides the business of it of course, and that’s the readers. That’s you! If you guys and girls hadn’t supported us, we wouldn’t be here.
Next week we celebrate and we give something back. The Beat Party is on and this time it’s not thrashing, but smoothing down a jazzy, funk, blues road. Being Gado-Gado, one of the better restaurants in Bali, we do have to control ourselves a little and we are bringing some of the finest entertainment the island has to offer along with us. We still have some invitations for our faithful readers in the office if you would like to contact us by e-mail info@beatmag.com. The sponsors include Jose Cuervo, Bali Moon, Indowines, Storm Brewing and Heineken Beer. Remember, it’s by invitation only until 11pm, which is also the end of the freeflow, so we’d love to see you there and fantastic to hear the many comments from folks sending in the email for the invitations (great to hear from you) but remember to bring your invite!
Peace. Ed
