Sinners in Paradise - Discovery Villas, Canggu
Bliss has been causing a sensation on the Jakarta scene since their opening earlier this year. Now they’re in Bali with three huge parties. Anyone who checked last year’s all-nighter at Discovery, Canggu featuring the Yoshitoshi crew will surely be rubbing their hands in glee – this is another classic Bali venue. Bliss has enlisted the talents of DJ Johan Cyber (Amsterdam) who will be headlining with support from DJs Lawrence and Agoose out of Jakarta and Mario (Italy/Bali). And no outdoor party in Bali would be complete without that true blue rave atmosphere, brought to life by VJ Idiotiqhue (Retinal Bloom) shuffling headgear imagery, plus lasers, fire jugglers visuals galore, a 50k sound system AND a bonfire.

DJ Johan Cyber has been putting out consistently high quality productions out of Holland since 1989 and is one of the country’s low key heroes, though his imprint Cyber Records is known around the world. He has his own record shop in Leiden, Holland and hosts a radio show every week on ID&T entitled Heaven’s Gate as well as another show called Floorfillers on Fresh FM. He’s played alongside the likes of Laurent Garnier, Derrick May, Junior Vasquez, Stacey Pullen and Kenny Larkin, as well as working with legendary US producer Jaydee – Anyone detecting a techno tendency here?? Actually, he’s more on a prog tip so to the Jakarta posse that’s bound to be swooping down for the party, no sweat, this guy is sure to float your boat…

Castaway @ GWK
So here it is finally. Melbourne Party nutters Vegas Boy Productions in conjunction with the Double Six group bring us a monumental party at a monumental venue. A genuinely world class DJ Line Up led by Tribal master Marcello Castelli (see interview) plus Jason Digby, Tony Crea, Paul Etheridge, Kev Shiu, Jefree Atizado and Donni1. There’ll be wild trapeze acts, fire shows and all of it taking place in an incredible light/sound environment with 3-400 separate components including lasers and a 100k soundsytem. Should be the biggest party Bali has ever seen.
To coincide with the Castaway event and sure to make it that much more mesmerizing, a record breaking Kecak Dance has been organized in the early evening with 1001 [yes, one thousand and one] participants coming from all over Bali. Kecak, a Balinese dance created in the 1930’s in Bona taken from the story of the Ramayana epic and used to entertain visiting tourists ever since has become one of the most famous Balinese dances doing the rounds. A Kecak of this magnitude has never been witnessed before in Bali and should be an amazing spectacle to behold for the few allowed in. A-Select DJs brings us another major gig at Double Six, with a double whammy of high profile and (more to the point) musically elevated dance gear. First off, Phil K. A native of Melbourne, he’s been making some serious waves on the international dance scene. Back in 2002, he made DJ magazines Top 10 complilations with his mix entitled Balance04, placing him amongst such hallowed company as Stephane K, DeepDish and FreqNasty.
Phil spent much of the nineties working for DMC, testing and refining their DJing equipment which has led him now to work for Pioneer, showcasing just what their CD mixers are capable of. This technical know how makes him a genuine performer behind the decks. His technical background might also explain in part his love of breakbeats, a musical format that gives more leeway to his blending, chopping and EFX skills – plus by his own admission, he likes to play left of center. Either way, he is one of the world’s most respected DJs, both by crowds and industry types, a fact attested to by his list of credits – Dave Seaman’s Renaissance moniker, the Global Underground mix series, Therapy and Dex&Efx.
Kevin Shiu is one of the West Coast’s finest and a member of the Vancouver family that includes Tyler Stadius and our own Jefrree Atizado amongst its members. Although known by his faithful Vancouver followers as a mainly progressive DJ, but he also has a penchant for deeper darker stuff of the kind that Tyler Stadius was dropping a couple of weekends back down at 66 and a certain John Digweed has championed – we’re talking Tech House of course. In fact, Digweed described him as the best undiscovered DJ he’d come across in DJ magazine last year. And every time a certain DJ Tiesto comes to Vancouver, it is Kevin who backs him up.
