ARTS

PROFILE ARTIST:

PUTU SUDIANA ‘BONUZ’

Age: 32
Nationality: Indonesian
Studies: ISI (Indonesian Art Institute)

Flat intriguing shapes, concentrated lines, icons, warm colored or golden squares displayed harmoniously on canvases…Putu Sudiana’s paintings take the viewer on a journey full of colour, pattern, emotion and contemplation.

Most of Putu Sudiana’s, (nicknamed Bonuz) paintings are dominated by the colour black, however, “black is very strong among the other colors and matches with the taksu (inspiration) that I want to express. From the beginning and up to today, I express my restlessness through my abstract paintings”.
Consistently, Bonuz is an Abstract painter, enjoying the exploration and variety of shapes, lines and colors inspired by Balinese reality, spirituality and his own spiritual experiences.

His creative concept is “religious and magical elements”. As a Balinese, he admits that his paintings are inspired by human activities combined with Balinese nature. The appreciation Balinese people have of their God, expressed through many religious activities, really touches his sense of creativity. Hindu Rituals are also adominating feature of his paintings.

Bonuz was born on the small island of Nusa Penida. He chose art in an environment where most of his family and friends were living as farmers and fishermen. His strong faith and sheer hard work helped him get to where he is now.
“Since I was a kid, I really wanted to prove my existence as a painter, I wanted to prove that I can live appropriately by painting” says Bonuz.

He has participated in over 30 exhibitions both solo and group shows in Bali, Jakarta and other parts of Indonesia. Besides being actively exhibited, he has received several accolades including The Phillip Morris Art Award Jakarta in 1999.
