Paparazzi
Lounge hosted the launch of The Sumba Foundation’s
coffee table publication entitled simply ‘Sumba’.
The island of Sumba, not to be confused with neighbouring
Sumbawa, is home to one of the last remaining animist
cultures in the Indonesian archipelago. Yet its peoples
are also amongst the world’s poorest with high infant
mortality rates and poor access to clean water, medical
care and education.
The book is filled with stunning images of the many elements
that make up the island, from surfers riding its pristine
breaks to its famous megalithic grave sites and the Pasola
ritual where hundreds of brightly coloured horseman do
battle on a dusty plain.
The event brought together a host of Bali’s creative
community from artists to writers to photographers and
designers. Towards the end, world class photographer Jason
Childs presented a slide show of some of his own breathtaking
photographs of Sumba.
