“When
I get that feeling,
I need sexual healing.”
T his
unmistakable track by Marvin Gaye is not the usual Seminyak
soundtrack one struts into the Hu’u Bar with. But
once through the gold beaded curtains that drape across
the entrance way, one realizes that it’s not an
average night at the Hu’u Bar. Puttin’
the glitter back in glitterati, its Solid Gold night.
The spot transforms about once a month into a disco-lover’s
paradise complete with a raised and lit dance platform
(a la Saturday Night Fever); the essential disco mirror
ball, and gold lamé covered couches. DJ Jonny
(Jakarta) controlled the decks this September 18th and
covered the full disco spectrum. He started off
nice and easy with funk and soul classics by the likes
of Love Unlimited Orchestra and Earth, Wind, and Fire.
The musical excursion then continued through out
the night with classics from Diana Ross to Sister Sledge,
as well as disco standards from ABBA to Boney M. Jonny
then fast forwarded a generation to the era of Madonna
and Culture Club, and finally wrapped the night up nicely
with funk-fueled, bass driven, neo-disco and soulful house
jams.
Judging from the numbers in attendance [it was packed],
the uplifting party vibe, and the steady rockin’
dance floor, party people appear to be searching for a
sound beyond the pervasive progressive beats. At
least for once a month, we can ease up on the gas and
coast to the Solid Gold groove of DJ Jonny’s classic
throwback selections.
