ARTIST PROFILE

JOE MINTARDJA

Age: 32
Nationality: Indonesian
Studies: SMSR (Senior High School of Fine Arts) in Yogyakarta – Java
PRISMA ASRI & ISI (Indonesian Art Institute) in Yogyakarta - Java

African, Asian faces, primitive or tribal figures in warm colors are the kind of images that will captivate the viewer who comes across Joe Mintardja’s paintings.

Joe was born in a small village near Surabaya, East Java. His artistic talent was noticed when he was still a child. After finishing his art studies, he finally decided to move in 1999 to Bali, where he thought the inspiration and the challenge would be higher for his artistic carrier.
Beginning as an abstract and expressionist painter, Joe Mintardja finally found his way and accomplishment in figurative painting style. Using a realistic and classical technique, he is mainly painting faces of Asian and African people, sometimes really primitive figures (Iran Jaya, Papoua, New Guinea).
As a figurative artist, Joe is absolutely not interested in beauty but entirely in human characters and charisma in his subjects. Through these different portraits, a soul, a story, a life history appear and bring to them a different dimension.
Joe Mintardja uses his work as a motto for his life, and his motivation is to be skillful and continue contributing to society through his work.
From 1990 until now, Joe Mintardja has been actively exhibited all over Indonesia at galleries, museums and hotel - galleries (Jakarta, Surabaya, Yogyakarta and Bali).

You can find his work at “Joe Mintardja Studio”, 212 Tebesaya (400 meters from Jazz Café) in Ubud.
