Last time we caught up with the majestic loose limbed vocal improviser from Holland was in Dejavu with DJ Cassie6. It seems she liked Bali (and it liked her) because she came back for the holiday season, this time with a definite extra curve – for yes, the Empress is with child! Pregnancy has done nothing to dull her vocal edge though – last Thursday 13 down at Hu’u bar she performed a series of sets, entertaining the early evening dinner crowd first with some honeyed jazz vocals, building things up in the midnight hour with the help of DJ Jonny on the decks as the party kids appeared.

This summer, Hu’u has really fulfilled its potential for ‘around midnight’ revelry, combining cocktail chill out with a dance aesthetic, aided by their new kitschy glass dance platform. Lex Empress had us all on the floor and later assured me she’d be back in the New Year, after a little baby hiatus.
