Kecak Dancers become Castaways

Before the Castaway event a record breaking Kecak dance performance was performed with groups of dancers coming from all over the island to participate. A group of local fellas headed by Jan and Buana or better known as Bali Events Organizers (BEO) rushed the idea through the system and in two weeks had 1001 dancers ready to go for this amazing spectacle in one of Bali’s most breathtaking venues.

With some two hundred invited guests including the Governor of Bali and other dignitaries witnessing the event, the Kecak dance exploded into action but thankfully Mount Bromo didn’t. We asked Jan what the inspiration was for this show and he explained, “Mr Bali (a local identity) told me a story one evening a few months ago of a big reunion of Kecak dances many years ago and Mt Bromo happened to explode the next day.

I was thinking about this for some time and one night, a month ago, when I was dining with Archie, the organizer of Castaway, I suggested having this Kecak dance as part of his program. He jumped at the idea and within a couple of weeks and with the help of Buana, we had found over a thousand dancers to participate. We basically did it to help promote Bali and talked to Jane (local film maker) to film the whole show for use in a promotional film they are making about Bali. BEO, our organizing group hopes to do more events like this in the future. Maybe something on New Year’s Eve.”
And what about Mt Bromo? No explosions yet? “We hope in some small way by doing this we can show that people can do anything together if they put their minds to it. Maybe even stop a war in Iraq,” concluded Mr Jan.
