Hansen Gallery Ubud opens with ’11 Painters’

The brand new Hansen Gallery has just opened in the Sanggingan area, just 5 minutes from central Ubud. The official opening took place on Sunday 1st of August.
Around 200 people attended the event and the gallery space was crowded until 12pm…A busy and successful evening!
For its first Opening Exhibition (which will run until 22nd August) Hansen Gallery is showing the recent works of ‘Eleven Painters’ which also provides the title of the exhibition. These are: Antonius Kho, Dana Munut, Gde Sudarma, Hansen C, Hermawati Dr, Kerry Pendergrast, M. Suamba, Odong Junaidi, Pranoto, Regina Bimadona and S. Jiwatman .
The range of styles being exhibited include abstract, surrealist, naturalist and figurative works spread across the galleries two storey space, most of them created by young Indonesian artists (from Java, Sumatra, Kalimantan and Bali).
Hansen C, the owner, wanted to bring together a variety of styles for this, the inaugural exhibition. Born in 1960 in Toho, West Kalimantan (Borneo), he moved to Bali in 2003. He first opened a small gallery space near the post office in Ubud, and then decided to move to what he felt was a much more natural and authentic environment in Sanggingan. Hansen has exhibited his paintings in numerous venues worldwide.
His gallery is a really charming, cozy little two storey space which complements the naturalistic spirituality of his paintings. All elements used in the building’s construction are entirely natural, from the small black and white stones on the left and right sides and bamboo logs displayed in the center, to the earthen walls…upstairs the view stretches across an idyllic and calming view of rolling rice paddies.
If you are lucky, as I was, you might have a chance to enjoy classical piano music played by Hansen’s two children, another aspect of the relaxed and informal atmosphere that the owner has created. C.B
