Only
one restaurant on the now-thriving street of Jalan Laksmana
(Oberoi) has live music: Zappaz piano bar and restaurant.
When Eka is not on the sheek grand piano, the Latino music
group Parantos brings chill-out time to fruition three
times a week. Live tunes ranging from rock ‘n roll,
jazz, folk, to pop waft through the breezy open-air nightly
starting at 7pm.
Tuesday night jam sessions are open for all musicians
to come and join in, and audience participation is encouraged
every night. Modeled to give the feel of an old English
pub in the tropics, this family-oriented restaurant not
only offers a cruisy and welcoming atmosphere, but the
menu, featuring a mix of Asian and Western dishes is well
presented and delicious.
The Balinese chefs enhance the authenticity of the classic
Indonesian meals including Terong Goreng, crispy fried
eggplant with a ginger and sweet chili sauce (Rp18), Pepes
Ikan, fresh fish and spices wrapped in a banana leaf and
slow-grilled (Rp26), Sate Lilit, minced fresh fish mixed
with traditional Balinese spices served on fresh lemongrass
sticks with traditional sambal (Rp24), and the house specialty
Zappaz Curry, tender chicken and potato morsels in a light
Indian-influenced curry (Rp30). Steak, Chicken Schnitzel,
Bangers and Mash, and Pumpkin Soup are some of the western
highlights. Portions are extremely generous, and are ideal
for dining with groups who wish to sample many of the
dishes. Half-price kid meals are an added bonus. A fully
stocked bar with top-shelf liquors makes happy hour from
6-8 all the more inviting.
Zappaz is open from 9am till late for breakfast, lunch,
and dinner, and also caters to group functions, special
occasions, and birthdays. If you are in search of an evening
filled with light fun, great music, and an overall happy
atmosphere, stop in to Zappaz, and don’t forget
to bring the kids!
