Hands resting among folds of fabric, rich tones and bold
colors combined, captivate the viewer who stands in front
of the paintings of Dewa Adnyana.
Born in Batubulan, famous for its distinctive style of
traditional Balinese painting, Dewa attended the local
fine arts school where he began on his own independent
path. Since he started painting in 1996, the bulk of his
work is based on detailed parts of the human figure.
His role model has always been his father who has continually
nurtured and supported Dewa’s artistic talent, by
providing him with the best education available. The admiration
Dewa has for him is a constant driving force in his work.
Using an extremely realistic and classical technique,
Dewa is mainly painting the hands and feet of his elderly
father, surrounded by the bright and vibrant colors of
his traditional clothing. He focuses on the actual part
of the figure and is “not interested in showing
any background situation.” For Dewa, the most expressive
part of the figure is the hands, which show the depth
and history of a person’s full life. He also finds
that the hands and feet of his elderly models are the
most technically challenging elements to work on. Dewa
can spend up to an average of two weeks on one small painting.
You can find Dewa’s work at:
Klinik Taksu Gallery, Jl Gunung Rinjani in Denpasar
and at Gaya Fusion of Senses, Jl Raya Sayan, Ubud.
