The jury at the New York International
Independent Film Festival has awarded its first prize in
the Best International Documentary category to first time
Canadian Director/Producer Jane Walters’ for her film
‘Bali: Hope in Paradise’ - an unflinching feature-length
account of lives torn apart by the terrorist bombing of
a Bali nightclub in 2002. ‘Bali: Hope in Paradise’,
narrated by the Discovery Channel’s Asha Gill with
music contributed by music legend Sting, premiered to a
sell out crowd of diplomats, journalists and film-lovers,
at New York’s East Village Cinema during the prestigious
festival back in April.
The documentary focuses on Asriana ‘Sri’ Kebon
- a Balinese princess, born to an Australian mother and
a Balinese father, whose selfless effort and dedication
offered so much to the local people who lost husbands and
wives, mothers and fathers, in the shocking attacks on the
‘Island of the Gods.’
Walters’ inspiring narrative follows Sri as she battles
hard-nosed politicians, bumbling bureaucrats and the world’s
focus on the westerners slaughtered in the nightclub to
reunite two local children, who lost their mother in the
bomb, with their father, locked in an Australian immigration
detention center.
If you missed it first time around or want to see the film
again, it will be showing again in Bali very soon.
