SURF
GIRLS-GO-SURFING DAY (JUNE 26)
Spirits were high, smiles were bright and willpowers focused amongst the record high number of girls learning to surf in Bali last Saturday when Rip Curl put on a much-appreciated Girls-Go-Surfing Day. The response to the event was great with 89 surfer girls, of varying nationalities and age, rocking up to Legian Beach with the one goal to learn how to surf! “This was the best time ever. Thanks Rip Curl!!!” Lisa, 30, from Java, said with excitement in her eyes, adding that she had had so much fun that she would definitely try surfing again. Nadia, 24, also from Java but now living in Bali, had come all the way from Ubud to give surfing a try and loved it so much that she quickly changed her original plan of returning home for the night in order to stay in Kuta and go for another surf session the next day! “It was so much fun, I’ll be back down here next weekend again for sure,” she said stoked. The many local surf media people and surf photographers in place were also impressed by the Rip Curl initiative, and words like ‘fantastic’ and ‘awesome’ were repeatedly expressed to describe the successful event and the 89 girls’ determination in learning to surf.
Whereas similar Rip Curl girl events have been run on a regular basis all over the world for many years, last Saturday was the first time for such an event in Indonesia. “There is an increasing number of Indonesian girls wanting to learn to surf but they usually need a little push to get out there,” Jasmine of Rip Curl Indonesia said. “Here at Rip Curl we really want to encourage these girls so that they feel empowered enough to claim their space in the line ups, to catch waves and have as much fun in the water as the local boys,” Jasmine added. The idea with Rip Curl’s Girls-Go-Surfing Day was thus to provide an opportunity for these girls to have their first go on a surfboard in a friendly and safe environment under the guidance of qualified surf coaches from Rip Curl and School of Surf. Rip Curl Indonesia’s own team rider and surf coach, Madeleine from Australia, was one of the coaches proud to see so many girls showing interest and talent for the sport. “Everybody had fun and came out of the water with a smile on their faces. It was good to see,” she said. The sun was shining and conditions were good as a fairly strong wind created closeouts along the beaches all the way from Kuta to Seminyak - A disappointing beach break day for the more experienced surfers perhaps, but perfect for our girls learning to surf! Thanks to all the ripping girls taking part in Rip Curl’s Girl-Go-Surfing Day and congratulations to the five award winners: Arielle for ‘Most Promising Surfer’; Kamilla for ‘Longest Ride’; Julien for ‘Best Wipe Out’; Lisa for ‘Best Style’; and Surya for ‘Best Jump Up’. Many thanks also to School of Surf for the great teamwork, and for Surfer Girl to make this event possible!
